I’ve been asked a few times how I make my lather. The biggest key I have found whether you have a soap, puck or cream is water. It is “wet shaving”. Soak your brush: NUMBER one thing, you gotta soak your brush. Warm water 30-60 seconds. Let that brush absorb the water. Wring it out some. Loading the brush: about 20-30 seconds with that wet brush in circles in the shave soap. Aeration: After seeing @The Antiquated Gent and how he adds additional water to his lather bowl, I started experimenting with amounts. Like soap in your hands, with water it lathers it up when you rub your hands together. I go around in the lather bowl for about 20-30 seconds. If it looks a little dry, add a few drops of water. You can load a little more soap too. Applying the lather: the brush helps prep your skin. Don’t paint, rub the brush around. Everything shown here is from @parkersafetyrazor (Taconic shave). A hot shower softens the stubble and loosens the skin. Pretreating with a shave oil adds to the friction reduction of the blade. A good all natural shave soap can help reduce your skin from drying out. A good razor like this Adjustable variant DE safety razor is worth its weight in gold. Angle of attack is roughly 30 degrees. Tighten the skin, light pressure can help prevent nicks. Facial hair grows in different directions. For the closest shave, shave with, across and against growth(if your skin can tolerate it). My basics for styling my mustache. Today I chose my @Death Grip Wax Sudden Death strong hold. Clean dry mustache. No oils or balms. I use a hair dryer to align and give the hairs direction. Scrape out the wax, rub and coat your fingers. I make 3 passes each side stage one. Wait 3-5 minutes. Small amounts to finalize the shape. #reply @That2sl0whummer👑 Here is my shaving foundation I have followed for over 35 years. A hot shower first can really help “loosen” the skin and make the stubble softer. Softer will cut better. For 1st time shavers, I generally recommend a brand of razors I have used a lot, the @Schick hydro ultra or this Xtreme 5 disposable. Replace after 3-5 shaves roughly. Whether gel, foam or the Cella shave cream like I use here, water with it helps a lot. This helps create a protective barrier to reduce blade friction and pull the razor closer to the skin. Facial hair grows in different directions. For the closest shave, shave with, across and against stubble growth. For your first time, shave with and see how that feels. A big key is light pressure, lift the razor after each stroke. I am using my @parkersafetyrazor adjustable variant DE (double edge) razor. Tightening the skin helps it be “flatter”. This helps reduce nicks (cuts). Nicks can and do happen to all of us. It takes some practice. I use my antiseptic alum block to help soothe and heal those nicks.
