We had a scare a couple of nights ago!!! All of a sudden our landline phone starts ringing and our cell phones start having emergency notifications. “There’s a fire in Sam Houston National Forest and you have to evacuate, NOW!!” That’s where we live. In the forest. Oliver and I immediately turned on the TV and grabbed a few suitcases. We threw pictures, documents, medicine, family treasures, irreplaceable items and an overnight bag together as quickly as we could. We were calm, but it was stressful. As we looked around, we were trying to select a few items to preserve in case we lost everything. Immediately, I began thinking about the fires that happened in the Palisades recently. My heart was pounding. This was the first time we ever did this….having to make serious and selective choices in a very short few minutes….what could we fit in the truck and still have room for our dog, Patton. Thank God… This was just a “drill…” if you will. Our house did not burn. We dodged a bullet. But… What it did do, is remind us that life is short and things happen. Today, after I get my wits back about me, I’m writing a list of things down that I would do differently if this ever happens again. Which suitcases to grab? Which pictures are a must have and other items that need to be in our go bag!!! Maybe… just maybe… You were meant to hear this story so that you could prepare in the case you have to leave your home suddenly. I know I’m saying my prayers for those families impacted by the fires last night here in Sam Houston National Forest and thanking God that we were spared. A good reminder not to take anything for granted!!!!!! #ad We went with a 26 gauge metal panel from @burrowspostframesupply on the roof and side walls. The color is called Textured Black and it’s gorgeous…not to shiny or dull… just the right amount of sheen. And it will really hold up to our weather and sunlight in Southeast Texas. And remember, when you’re ordering your metal panels for your own build project, pay attention to the gauge you’re being quoted. In general, we recommend at least a 26 gauge on the roof and 29 gauge on the side walls. The higher the gauge, the softer the metal. If you are in an area of the country that’s prone to heavy hail storms, a thicker roof panel is better. Most homeowner’s insurance will NOT cover cosmetic damage. This means that if you have a hail storm and it dents your roof panels, you could be on your own to fix. Day 3 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tour It’s a dogtrot design located in Fredericksburg, Texas. What’s a Dogtrot you ask? Some people call it a breezeway home. It’s where the center of the Barndo is a covered porch and there’s typically living space on each side of the breezeway. This was a very popular design back in the 1800s through the mid 1900s. Then came the advent of air conditioning and home designs changed. Fast forward to 2015 and we’ve started to see a resurgence in this type of design, particularly in the country. There are 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, mud/laundry/pantry combo and a beautiful vaulted great room on the left-hand side. On the right side of the Dogtrot, the space is prepped to finish out with two in-law suites. Don’t need thein-laws suites… you’re in Fredericksburg… wine country!!! Day 24 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tour We’re in Tennessee. Here is just a sneak peek of the basketball court we designed for country performing artist, Walker Hayes and his beautiful family. The Hayes design is all about family, friends and entertaining at home. Walker and Laney’s kids will invite their friends over… And I predict they’ll never leave! And talk about bringing the outside in! We included 8 glass garage doors in their design including the pass-through kitchen window bar! Walker is not only a talented songwriter and musician, he’s also a good man, and a great father and a wonderful husband! And boy does he put on a fabulous concert! Day 2 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tours During the month of February, we’re bringing you 28 Barndos that we’ve designed, that are on the ground. This one, is the very popular Murphy Design. It’s a reverse two story layout…meaning that the primary living area is located upstairs. Downstairs, we have the entry, game room, bunk, room, office, full bath and oversize garage shop. Upstairs, there’s a vaulted great room, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, plus laundry. This allows homeowners to have sweeping views from the second story of their home overlooking their property. In addition to that, we have 2 spacious elevated covered porches… one on each end of the Barndo. Talk about bringing the outside in!!! Pass through kitchen window bar, soaring ceilings, outdoor fireplace, huge slider door and room for a future elevator, makes this luxury Barndominium design spectacular! All of this in just under 3200 ft.² of living and over 1500 ft.² in covered porches. And our client is thinking about screening in the porches! Nice!!!! Day 26 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tour There’s only a couple of days left in our tour. We’re sharing 28 real Barndo’s that we designed that are on the ground. If you missed any, be sure to start on February 1 to see all the projects. Some of them are complete, and some of them are pretty far along under construction. We’re trying to show you projects from all over the country, with different exteriors, different designs and different features. Today, we’re in Washington state with our clients, Korrin and Tyler. This is an amazing custom shouse design we created for them. What’s a shouse you ask? It’s a shop/house combination Barndominium. Part house. Parts shop….all under one roofline. Tyler is acting as his own general contractor and planned to do a lot of the work himself. Unfortunately, he had an accident at work that set him back months and he’s about to undergo his second surgery. In the meantime, the family did not want to stop any longer on their project so they enlisted the help of some friends and a few subcontractors. Onward and upward. My mom used to say… When you find yourself with a roadblock in front of you, put your head down and keep pushing forward. Just keep pushing forward. I have a feeling Tyler’s mom told him the same thing at some point because that’s exactly what he’s doing. Bravo!!!! Their home is beautifully situated on their property to take in the mountain views off the great room. They hope to be in sometime this summer. Day 15 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tour We’re sharing 28 Barndos, we’ve designed, that are on the ground—-during the month of February! If you’ve missed any of the first 14 days, you’re going to want to go back and take a look. Some amazing Barndominium builds!!! This one is in Southeast Texas and Jared @tujay_homes and his crew build this gorgeous Dogtrot Barndo. What’s a “Dogtrot” you ask? Well, first off… it happens to be one of my favorite Barndo design styles. It’s where there’s a breezeway between two areas. This style of home dates back to the 1800s before air conditioning existed. The thought process was that by creating a breezeway between two interior spaces, you could cool off the rooms during the summer. Often times, you would find the living/sleeping area on one side and either the kitchen or your work area on the other side of the breezeway. This allowed the main area of the house to stay cooler in the summer by not cooking in there where you plan to sleep. It was a very popular style, particularly out in the countryside and it worked!! When we design Dogtrot Barndos, we break it up into three parts… A, B, and C. The details of this beautiful Barndo: A Side (left of Breezeway): 1 Bedroom 1 1/2 Baths Office Walk-in Pantry About 2400 ft.² of Living B is for Breezeway—The middle of the Design Over 1000 ft.² of Covered Porch C Side (right of Breezeway) 3 Bedrooms 3 Baths All… With their own entrances! I LOVE it!!! Gorgeous!!! And there’s more. The separate detached garage has a spacious Inlaw suite with 1 bedroom, 1 bath plus den and there’s a huge storage area upstairs accessible by staircase. Day 20 of our Fabulous February Barndo Tour Just a little peek at country rock performing artist @brantleygilbert ‘s gorgeous Barndo!! And of course I had to pair this reel with his hit song Off The Rails! Oliver and I got a chance to visit with clients, Brantley and his wife, Amber, while we were in Georgia in October. I keep trying to think about what’s my favorite thing about their Barndo… The two glass garage doors? The past through kitchen window bar? All the covered porches? The outdoor kitchen? Those fabulous @macroairfans ? The modern black on black color palette? The custom circular staircase by @paragonstairs ? The detached covered porch with fireplace overlooking the lake?! I just can’t decide. Heck… I love it all!!! And I’m going to tell you, if you haven’t been to one of his concerts, you’re definitely missing an amazing performance!
