Dojo Kun Recited in Japanese by Kancho T. Okuyama (2021) These are the five principles of Karate, also known as the Dojo Kun. They are recited at the end of every Karate class as a reminder of the values that Karate promotes. * 一、人格完成に努むること (Hitotsu, jinkaku kansei ni tsutomu koto) - Seek perfection of character (or “Strive for the perfection of one’s character”) * 一、誠を重んずること (Hitotsu, makoto o omonzuru koto) - Be faithful (or “Be sincere and truthful”) * 一、努力を続けること (Hitotsu, doryoku o tsudzukeru koto) - Endeavor (or “Cultivate the spirit of perseverance”) * 一、他者を尊重すること (Hitotsu, tasha o sonchō suru koto) - Respect others (or “Respect others and be compassionate”) * 一、暴力を戒めること (Hitotsu, bōryoku o imashimeru koto) - Refrain from violent behavior (or “Abstain from violent behavior”) These principles are not just for Karate students. They are valuable lessons for everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. By following these principles, we can all live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.
