Luis Leon, an 82-year-old who had survived t0rtur3 and spent nearly four decades as a legal U.S. resident, went to an immigration office to replace his lost green card. Instead of helping him, ICE officers arrested him, detained his wife for ten hours, and falsely informed his family—with the help of someone posing as an attorney—that he had died. In reality, ICE discreetly moved Leon through a detention facility in Minnesota before abandoning him in Guatemala—a country with which he has no connection. No official deportation records exist, and there was no public notice about his case. Leon’s family only discovered he was alive thanks to relatives in Chile who managed to locate him in a Guatemalan hospital. Leon has serious health problems, including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
