From 14 July 2025, Australia will lift restrictions that previously prevented sexually active gay and bisexual men, as well as some trans women, from donating plasma. Under the new guidelines, individuals in monogamous relationships or those who have not had anal sex in the last three months will be eligible to donate. This includes trans women who are HIV-negative and taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). According to Lifeblood, Australia’s blood donation service, this change could result in an additional 24,000 plasma donors, contributing around 95,000 more plasma donations per year, without compromising the safety of the blood supply.
