#invisibledisability reminder🤍 I saw a video recently saying that people without mobility aids shouldn’t use the accessible resources (parking, bathroom stall) available to them, and I could not disagree more. Roughly 80% of disabilities are invisible and you can not tell by looking at the person that they are disabled, which means that you can not determine their accessibility and accommodation needs either! The day this was filmed, I did need to use my cane, but I couldnt due to severe hand and arm pain. There is no other visible indication to show that I needed that parking space, or I needed the accessible bathroom stall, but I DID. If you have been given resources or accommodations or if an aid, tool, or accessibility impliments improve your experiences, USE THEM. Endometiosis is truly so unpredictable and I never know how my body is going react to certain triggers, my biggest being my period. On day one I am unable to walk and dependent on my partner to care for me, on the day 5 I walked around the lights (assisted) for 2 hours! Being able to schedule my life around predicted flares is a game changer (I might not be the best at this but im learning) because feeling guilt and shame on top of the physical symptoms does not help me rest at all. Reminiscing on this ASL centered coffee shop in PDX🥰 @woodstockcafepdx is a Deaf friendly, quaint coffee shop that hosts different deaf community events such as signing nights every Tuesday evening. They have a visible menu as well as tablet menu where you can order. All staff knows ASL, and they have microphones with speech to text software at the counter for those who dont sign. Go check them out!
