For many Inuit women today, getting tunniit means: ✨ “I carry my culture on my skin.” ✨ “I honor the women who couldn’t.” ✨ “This is who I am—and who I come from.” I’m a proud Indigenous woman 🇬🇱🥰 There isn’t a lot of representation out there for Inuit creators (not saying there isn’t any), and not many people truly understand our culture so I want to start sharing more of who I am and where I come from. 🥹🫶🏼 (not turning this into my main content 😂 but it feels important to let you all see this side of me too) Getting tunniit (traditional Inuit tattoos) is a deeply spiritual, cultural, and personal act especially for Inuit women. The meaning goes far beyond aesthetics. In the 19th and 20th centuries missionaries and colonial officials banned tunniit labeling them “evil.” Inuit women were shamed or punished for wearing them. So today, choosing to get tunniit is part of a healing and resistance journey, a way of reclaiming what was stolen & honoring the unshakable strength of the women who came before me 🙌🏼🙂↕️🫶🏼♥️ #fyp #neeniesteenie #indigenous #inuit #inuk #tattoo #culture #foryoupage #greenland #culture #rainneyandneen @Nuunu Chemnitz Berth @Rainney Thompson
My culture lives in me — now it lives on me These tunniit were traditionally placed on the hands, face, or joints to protect the body’s openings and spiritual entry points. The belief was that evil spirits or negative energy could enter through these “holes” in the body — your eyes, mouth, ears and so on — so the tattoos acted like sacred seals or guardians #fyp #neeniesteenie #indigenous #inuit #tattoo #culture
